We look forward to speaking with you, Danny Benjafield (WMDE) (talk) 08:53, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?
[boarne bewurkje]Apologies for writing in English.
The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to make reusing references easier. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.
- The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen. More information here.
- Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
- Compensation is available.
- Sessions will be held in January and February.
- Sign up here if you are interested.
- Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.
We’re looking forward to seeing you, Thereza Mengs (WMDE)

Feminism and Folklore 2024
[boarne bewurkje]Dear Wiki Community,
You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2024 writing competition from February 1, 2023, to March 31, 2023 on your local Wikipedia. This year, Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-focused topics for the project, with a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap focus and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.
You can help Wikipedia's coverage of folklore from your area by writing or improving articles about things like folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, women and queer folklore figures, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales, and more. Users can help create new articles, expand or translate from a generated list of suggested articles.
Organisers are requested to work on the following action items to sign up their communities for the project:
- Create a page for the contest on the local wiki.
- Set up a campaign on CampWiz tool.
- Create the local list and mention the timeline and local and international prizes.
- Request local admins for site notice.
- Link the local page and the CampWiz link on the meta project page.
This year, the Wiki Loves Folklore Tech Team has introduced two new tools to enhance support for the campaign. These tools include the Article List Generator by Topic and CampWiz. The Article List Generator by Topic enables users to identify articles on the English Wikipedia that are not present in their native language Wikipedia. Users can customize their selection criteria, and the tool will present a table showcasing the missing articles along with suggested titles. Additionally, users have the option to download the list in both CSV and wikitable formats. Notably, the CampWiz tool will be employed for the project for the first time, empowering users to effectively host the project with a jury. Both tools are now available for use in the campaign. Click here to access these tools
Learn more about the contest and prizes on our project page. Feel free to contact us on our meta talk page or by email us if you need any assistance.
We look forward to your immense coordination.
Thank you and Best wishes,

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees 2024 Selection
[boarne bewurkje]Dear all,
This year, the term of 4 (four) Community- and Affiliate-selected Trustees on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees will come to an end [1]. The Board invites the whole movement to participate in this year’s selection process and vote to fill those seats.
The Elections Committee will oversee this process with support from Foundation staff [2]. The Board Governance Committee created a Board Selection Working Group from Trustees who cannot be candidates in the 2024 community- and affiliate-selected trustee selection process composed of Dariusz Jemielniak, Nataliia Tymkiv, Esra'a Al Shafei, Kathy Collins, and Shani Evenstein Sigalov [3]. The group is tasked with providing Board oversight for the 2024 trustee selection process, and for keeping the Board informed. More details on the roles of the Elections Committee, Board, and staff are here [4].
Here are the key planned dates:
- May 2024: Call for candidates and call for questions
- June 2024: Affiliates vote to shortlist 12 candidates (no shortlisting if 15 or less candidates apply) [5]
- June-August 2024: Campaign period
- End of August / beginning of September 2024: Two-week community voting period
- October–November 2024: Background check of selected candidates
- Board's Meeting in December 2024: New trustees seated
Learn more about the 2024 selection process - including the detailed timeline, the candidacy process, the campaign rules, and the voter eligibility criteria - on this Meta-wiki page, and make your plan.
Election Volunteers
Another way to be involved with the 2024 selection process is to be an Election Volunteer. Election Volunteers are a bridge between the Elections Committee and their respective community. They help ensure their community is represented and mobilize them to vote. Learn more about the program and how to join on this Meta-wiki page.
Best regards,
Dariusz Jemielniak (Governance Committee Chair, Board Selection Working Group)

[3] https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Minutes:2023-08-15#Governance_Committee
[4] https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections_committee/Roles
[5] Even though the ideal number is 12 candidates for 4 open seats, the shortlisting process will be triggered if there are more than 15 candidates because the 1-3 candidates that are removed might feel ostracized and it would be a lot of work for affiliates to carry out the shortlisting process to only eliminate 1-3 candidates from the candidate list.

Your wiki will be in read-only soon
[boarne bewurkje]Read this message in another language • Please help translate to your language
The Wikimedia Foundation will switch the traffic between its data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster.
All traffic will switch on 20 March. The test will start at 14:00 UTC.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
- You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Wednesday 20 March 2024.
- If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.
Other effects:
- Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
- We expect the code deployments to happen as any other week. However, some case-by-case code freezes could punctually happen if the operation require them afterwards.
- GitLab will be unavailable for about 90 minutes.

Reaksje op WikiWomen-projekt
[boarne bewurkje]@Drewes, Kneppelfreed, FreyaSport, RomkeHoekstra, en Welberry: Ik krige oer it WikiWomen-projekt it folgjende e-mailberjocht fan Sandra Rientjes fan Wikimedia Nederlân:
- Dag Ieneach fan 'e Esk,
Miskien kinne we de reaksjes fierders even yn it Hollânsk dwaan, sadat frou Rientjes se ek lêze kin.

@Drewes, Kneppelfreed, FreyaSport, RomkeHoekstra, en Welberry: Op 6 maaie skreau Sandra Rientjes oan my:
- Goedemiddag!
- Over it kladblok het volgende.
Gr.
Tank yn alle gefallen foar jimme reaksjes, we nimme it mei.
As der troch learlingen as troch in frijwilliger fan wikipedy in side oer in frou skreaun is graach oan dizze list taheakje.

FreyaSport (oerlis) 23 jul 2024, 11.51 (CEST)
- @Welberry: Dit is it artikel oer Olatz Otalora dat ien fan 'e learlingen út it WikiWomen-projekt skreaun hat. It is no 25 july en de skoalfakânsjes binne oan 'e gong. Hjir sil dus neat mear oan ferbettere wurde. Ik hie it oars fuortsmiten, want it is gewoan rommel, mar ik woe it jo ris sjen litte. Ik haw it omneamd ta Wikipedy:Foarbyld fan hoe't it net moat sadat de gewoane lêzer der net mei konfrontearre wurdt. Bot flag
[boarne bewurkje]Hi! I made a comment at Wikipedy_oerlis:Ambassade#Checking_files about checking files and GFDL. As I understand Wikipedy:Bots I can request a bot flag here.
I would like to change Berjocht:GFDL to Berjocht:GFDL-with-disclaimers to be able to remove the disclaimers (Sjoch ek: foarbehâld.) from GFDL (per en:Wikipedia:GFDL standardization).
I have bot flag on many wikis and have millions of edits with a bot. I use pywikipedia bot and the edits are monitored.
I have made some test edits with my bot Wiki:Meidogger-bydragen/MGA73bot so you can see how it will look.
I noticed that some files were actually licensed with Berjocht:Eigenwurk before they were licensed with GFDL. So they should perhaps be changed back. That will also remove the disclaimers. But I will leave the bot edits as they are now.
I noticed many files are copied to Commons. I suggest to delete the local files. And I could perhaps mark those file with my bot too if you agree.
If you think so I could perhaps help do some of the other edits I mentioned in Wikipedy_oerlis:Ambassade#Checking_files later. --MGA73 (oerlis) 1 jul 2024, 20.28 (CEST)
- I suggest you start with assumming that no-one here speaks your language. This not a big W:, so if you dont speak Frisian, it's unlikely that anyone here will speak your native tongue. However:Wikipedy:Babel.
- So, having understood that most likely no-one reading this will understand exactly what you are talking about, ask about one thing only. Don't say you need a bot flag because of what happens on other W:; we don't have the manpower to go checking those other W:. Let your bot demonstrate here (fy:) that it can be trusted enough to run around freely. (That should be in the explanation of how bots work.) Mysha (oerlis)
- The result of removing the original after a move to Comments, is that Commons now has a lot of images that the sources are lacking for. Even if you decide to make that a separate proposal, as you should anyway, don't expect mass support. Mysha (oerlis)
- Hello. I've consulted about your request with the other two active administrators on this Wikipedia, and we unanimously feel that we are entirely capable of managing the images on this Wikipedia ourselves. I'm sure you mean well, but we feel that we don't need outside assistance. We wish you well with your work at the Danish Wikipedia and on Commons. Ieneach fan 'e Esk (oerlis) 15 jul 2024, 22.47 (CEST)
@Mysha I actualy did asume that not very many would understand my language (Danish) and that is why I wrote in English because there is a bigger chance to find users here that understand English.
It is correct that I mention more than one thing. But that should not be a problem? Just because we do not speak the same language does not mean you are only able to understand one thing at a time.
About source for files on Commons. If the files are transferred corretly to Commons there will still be a source. So it should not be a problem.
@Ieneach fan 'e Esk I'm happy you and the other two active administrators on this Wikipedia are capable of managing the images on this Wikipedia ourselves. That is how it should be on all wikis.
I have pointed out some issues that I therefore hope you will look at. For example when I look at wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy it seem to me there is some work to be done about an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) and the machine-readable format mentioned in the policy.
Also keeping files like Ofbyld:Hús.jpg without a license, a source and an author is not allowed according to the policy. The file was uploaded in 2006!
Personally I do not think there is anything wrong with accepting outside assistance. Anyway there are some queries on Meidogger:MGA73/Status#Ideas_and_things_to_work_on_(not_completed_yet) you are welcome to use as inspiration. --MGA73 (oerlis) 16 jul 2024, 10.34 (CEST)
- There is nothing wrong with accepting outside assistance, that is true, but we feel that in this instance we would rather handle it ourselves. You are right that we have neglected this aspect of our Wikipedia for too long. I promise you I will have a good look at this stuff once the vacation period is over. An orphaned image like Hús.jpg, not used on any page en without information about what it exactly is (other than, of course, a house) and why it was uploaded, could be deleted if you ask me. But I'm not the king of this Wikipedia, so we will have to talk about it. Thank you for drawing our attention to this issue. Ieneach fan 'e Esk (oerlis) 16 jul 2024, 22.18 (CEST)
- I see a lot of files have been checked allready. Great!!!
- I have now checked the edits I made with my bot again and restored the original license {{Eigenwurk}} on most of the files because they should not be {{GFDL-with-disclaimers}}. The same shoud be done with the most of the remaining files that use {{GFDL}}. I noticed that a few of the files are copied from other wikis without a good source and without mentioning the author. They should either be fixed or deleted.
- I made Meidogger:MGA73/Information and you are welcome to use whatever you can if you want to create at template to use that for all free files. --MGA73 (oerlis) 31 jul 2024, 15.37 (CEST)

Ambassadeur
Mysha (oerlis) 16 jul 2024, 15.23 (CEST)
- Op it stuit bin ik wer wat oan it skriuwen foar ús Wikipedy, mar it ûntbrekt my oan tiid om noch in funksje derby te dwaan. Groetnis Kening Aldgilles (oerlis) 16 jul 2024, 21.51 (CEST)
Dus by my ek gjin animo om ambassadeur te wurden. Ieneach fan 'e Esk (oerlis) 16 jul 2024, 22.38 (CEST)
ChatGPT (keunstmjitte yntelliginsje)
[boarne bewurkje]Bêste minsken,
Nije artikelen wurde faak oerset of mei help fan literatuer (boarnen) skreaun. Sûnt in pear wiken meitsje ik gebrûk fan ChatGPT yn it Frysk. ChatGPT kin yn in pear sekonden tiid in lange lape tekst yn it Frysk generearje. En nee, dy tekst is noch net perfekt! Lykwols docht ChatGPT 80% (of in grut part) fan it wurk foar dy.
Wolle jim it sels ek besykje? Op it plak fan ... follest dus in ûnderwerp yn. Wa wit, kin it jim helpe om noch flugger artikelen te skriuwen. Mei freonlike groetnis Kening Aldgilles (oerlis) 16 jul 2024, 22.03 (CEST)
- @Kening Aldgilles: Goeie. A.I. oanlevere wurde, net 100% betrouber binne. Kontrolearje jo alle feiten wol goed foar't jo it op 'e Wikipedy sette? Ieneach fan 'e Esk (oerlis) 16 jul 2024, 22.35 (CEST)
- Och, "betinkt", dêr wit ik neat oer: Mar blaaibots hawwe itselde manko as Google syn oersetter; út en troch misse hja in "net", as soks, en omt hja gjin oare tafier hawwe ta korreksje, skriuwe hja fierder út wat hja sels optocht hawwe. Sjoch, eachen hawwe der west foar mear sa 50 miljoen jierren, dat it is net núver as in fersje dy't net in iuw âld is noch net krekt sa goed funksjonearet. Mei blaaibots is it net oars: Jo moate der fan útgean dat der grif eat mis wêze sil; at er eat seit dêr't jo neat oer wite, nim dan oan dat it ferkeard is, en fyn út hoe at it al is. Moai as min, witte jo nei ôfrin mear as yn it foar. Mysha (oerlis)
It resultaat foel bot ôf. In protte flaters, hast gjin spesifike ynformaasje en in hiel soad algemienheden. Boppedat joech ChatGPT gjin boarnen, wat dochs essinsjeel is foar in ensyklopedy. Drewes (oerlis) 18 jul 2024, 18.44 (CEST)
It traint himsels hieltyd wer mei nije KY-modellen en gigantyske bulten oan tekstgegevens. Op dit stuit wurket ChatGPT yn it Frysk frij aardich, better as yn 'e simmer. Doch der mei wat jim wolle, mar it soe geweldich wêze as ús Fryske Wikipedy in nije boost krijt. Groetnis --Kening Aldgilles (oerlis) 10 nov 2024, 13.35 (CET)

Coming soon: A new sub-referencing feature – try it!
[boarne bewurkje]Hello. For many years, community members have requested an easy way to re-use references with different details. Now, a MediaWiki solution is coming: The new sub-referencing feature will work for wikitext and Visual Editor and will enhance the existing reference system. You can continue to use different ways of referencing, but you will probably encounter sub-references in articles written by other users. More information on the project page.
We want your feedback to make sure this feature works well for you:
- Please try the current state of development on beta wiki and let us know what you think.
- Sign up here to get updates and/or invites to participate in user research activities.
Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team is planning to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We will reach out to creators/maintainers of tools and templates related to references beforehand.
Please help us spread the message. --Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 10:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

Your wiki will be in read-only soon

The Wikimedia Foundation will switch the traffic between its data centers. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster.
All traffic will switch on 25 September. The switch will start at 15:00 UTC.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
A banner will be displayed on all wikis 30 minutes before this operation happens. This banner will remain visible until the end of the operation.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
- You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Wednesday 25 September 2024.
This project may be postponed if necessary. You can read the schedule at wikitech.wikimedia.org. Any changes will be announced in the schedule.

'Wikidata item' link is moving, finally.
[boarne bewurkje]Hello everyone, I previously wrote on the 27th September to advise that the Wikidata item sitelink will change places in the sidebar menu, moving from the General section into the In Other Projects section. The scheduled rollout date of 04.10.2024 was delayed due to a necessary request for Mobile/MinervaNeue skin. I am happy to inform that the global rollout can now proceed and will occur later today, 22.10.2024 at 15:00 UTC-2. Please let us know if you notice any problems or bugs after this change. There should be no need for null-edits or purging cache for the changes to occur. Kind regards, -Danny Benjafield (WMDE) 22 okt 2024, 13.29 (CEST)

Proposal to enable the "Contribute" entry point in Western Frisian Wikipedia
[boarne bewurkje]Hello Western Frisian Wikipedians,
Apologies as this message is not in your language. Please help translate to your language.
The WMF Language and Product Localization team proposes enabling an entry point called "Contribute" to your Wikipedia.
The Contribute entry point is based on collaborative work with other product teams in the Wikimedia Foundation on Edit discovery, which validated the entry point as a persistent and constant path that contributors took to discover ways to contribute content in Wikipedia.
Therefore, enabling this entry point in your Wikipedia will help contributors quickly discover available tools and immediately click to start using them. This entry point is designed to be a central point for discovering contribution tools in Western Frisian Wikipedia.
Who can access it
Once it is enabled in your Wikipedia, newcomers can access the entry point automatically by just logging into their account, click on the User drop-down menu and choose the "Contribute" icon, which takes you to another menu where you will find a self-guided description of what you can do to contribute content, as shown in the image below. An option to "view contributions" is also available to access the list of your contributions.
For experienced contributors, the Contribute icon is not automatically shown in their User drop-down menu. They will still see the "Contributions" option unless they change it to the "Contribute" manually.
This feature is available in four Wikipedia (Albanian, Malayalam, Mongolian, and Tagalog). We have gotten valuable feedback that helped us improve its discoverability. Now, it is ready to be enabled in other Wikis. One major improvement was to make the entry point optional for experienced contributors who still want to have the "Contributions" entry point as default.
We plan to enable it on mobile for Wikis, where the Section translation tool is enabled. In this way, we will provide a main entry point to the mobile translation dashboard, and the exposure can still be limited by targeting only the mobile platform for now. If there are no objections to having the entry point for mobile users from your community, we will enable it by 10th December 2024.
We welcome your feedback and questions in this thread on our proposal to enable it here. Suppose there are no objections, we will deploy the "Contribute" entry point in your Wikipedia.
We look forward to your response soon.
Thank you!
On behalf of the WMF Language and Product Localization team. UOzurumba (WMF) (oerlis) 28 nov 2024, 05.23 (CET)
- Let's be honest, UOzurumba, you're going to deploy it to our Wikipedia whether there are objections or not. This is the rollout of the stupid narrow lay-out all over again. We made it abundantly clear we didn't want that, but you people at WMF shoved it down our throats anyway. So I see no reason to waste time on a serious response, because you're not going to listen to us if we say: keep your new entrypoint, we don't want it. I have zero confidence in you people at WMF. You're always fooling around with things that don't need fixing, and meanwhile the narrow lay-out is still a worthless piece of crap. We want the sidebar menu back where it belongs, including the links to all of the Wikipedias in other languages, instead of them being hidden away in a tab of a tab so you have to click four times to get where you want to go. And we want the table of contents back in the actual article, with the paragraphs numbered so you can see the structure of the text. Why don't you fix that? - Woenen jimme sizze dat dy unbrûkbere opdieling mei sin dien is? Ik hie oannaam dat it in bywurking wie fan in oare oanpassing. Hoe sette/krije wy dat wer werom? Mysha (oerlis)
- @Mysha: Ik haw it even foar jo opsocht: it giet hjiroer: Wikipedy:Oerlisside/Argyf20#The_Vector_2022_skin_as_the_default_in_two_weeks?. Dat krije wy net weromset, want it is ús fan boppenôf oplein troch de Wikimedia Foundation. Dus as jo net-ynlogd op 'e haadside arrivearje, krije jo altyd dy smelle lay-out foarset. As jo ynlogd binne, kinne jo it foar josels wer weromsette nei de âlde brede lay-out troch jo foarkarren oan te passen. It probleem is, dan krije jo wol hieltyd in oare lay-out te sjen as dat net ynlogde lêzers fan 'e Wikipedy foarset krije.
- It weromsetten giet sa. Jo moatte wêze by by Ynstellings, hielendal rjochts boppe-oan njonken jo meldingen, en dan moatte jo yn it tabblêd Uterlik fêstlizze hokker lay-out jo persoanlik brûke wolle. Dêrmei helje jo foar josels foargoed, mar allinnich as jo ynlogd binne, de brede lay-out werom, mar allinnich op 'e Fryske Wikipedey. Dus as jo in soad op nl: of en: of in oare Wikipedy komme, moatte jo dêr dy foarkar ek fêstlizze. It moat ek yn ien kear mooglik wêze foar alle Wikipedyen, neffens wat ik hjirre lês (tabel, tredde kolom). (Fektor âld en bewend 2010 hjit yn it Ingelsk blykber "Vector legacy (2010)".) Ieneach fan 'e Esk (oerlis) 29 nov 2024, 21.35 (CET)
- Tank foar de útlis. Is der eatr wat wy der yn Wikipey Mienskip oer sizze kinne? Mysha (oerlis) 3 des 2024, 10.17 (CET)
- Woenen jimme sizze dat dy unbrûkbere opdieling mei sin dien is? Ik hie oannaam dat it in bywurking wie fan in oare oanpassing. Hoe sette/krije wy dat wer werom? Mysha (oerlis)
It jout lykwols dúdlik oan dat dy standerdisaasje gjin doel hat. Ommers, soks soe allinnich wurkje at immen op mear wikipedyen arbeidsje soe. Mar it is no krekt rjochte op lju dy't noch gjin ûnderfining op in wikipedy hawwe. Grif, wy koenen wurkje oan it ferbetterjen fan de tagong foar nijkommers, mar dy standerdisaasje liket allinich doel te hawwen foar lju dy't op alle wikipedyen dwaande binne mei it dumpe fan in min oersette fersje fan in side op alle wikipedyen. Sa fier ik it sjen kin, docht dit neat foar ús. Mysha (oerlis)
- Hello All,
- Apollogies @Kneppelfreed, for the issue with the lay-out, and thank you @Mysha, for the explanation on how to switch to the desired layout setting.
- Since your community has concerns with the entry point, we won't deploy it to your Wiki. I appreciate all your feedback.
