Problems arising from implementation new skin

[boarne bewurkje]

@SGrabarczuk (WMF): Hello. We need your help with the new skin that has been introduced on our Wikipedia.

  • Since the implementation of the new skin the edges around most of our infoboxes have disappeared. It's not all infoboxes, only the generic/universal ones using the Berjocht:Ynfoboks generyk template. For instance here and here, but not here. I do not know enough of this stuff to solve it. Could you please fix it for us or direct us to someone who can?
  • Also, it is unclear to us how we can attach new pages in our Wikipedia to a Wikidata item in the new skin. Could you please explain to us how that works now?

@Ieneach fan 'e Esk, hello, I'm sorry for replying late. You've made some edits to this template. Does it work now? I don't know how this could have been connected to the change of the skin; I mean, templates are supposed to work the same across all the skins. Regarding connecting pages to Wikidata, I think you might have found it by now, but in any case - the link is in the menu on the left, in the Tools section ("Edit interlanguage links"). Our colleagues responsible for the language-related things, like interwiki and translations, have a discussion on what to do with this link. @SGrabarczuk (WMF): Hello. Yes, the problems with the disappearing edges around the infoboxes I solved myself through trial and error. It really was connected to the new skin, because we never had any problems with it in the old layout and still didn't when you introduced the new skin, but in the new skin itself, they didn't show. The template read:
{| class="toccolours vatop infobox" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="float:right; clear:right; width:{{{breedte|{{Ynfoboks/breedte}}}}}px; padding:0px; margin:0px 0px 1em 1em; font-size:85%;"
Like I said, with this we never hat any problems with edges in the old layout. I replaced this with:
{| class="toccolours vatop infobox" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="float:right; clear:right; width:{{{breedte|{{Ynfoboks/breedte}}}}}px; padding:0px; border:1px solid #aaaaaa; font-size:85%;"
which returned the edges to the infoboxes in the new skin. I later reinserted a piece of code (margin-left:0.5em; margin-bottom:0.5em;) to get a little more clearance around the edges.

About the other thing: Yes, we found the interlanguage link in the lefthand sidebar, but the only thing it does is open the "Create a new Item" form in Wikidata. You can't use it to link a new Wikipedia page to an item that already exists in Wikidata, so it's pretty useless. The onely way to link new pages to Wikidata items is, as far as I can see, to physically go to Wikidata, look up the item you need to link the new page to, and enter it there. Which is a giant step back to the way it was in, like, 2015. We haven't had to actually visit Wikidata to link up new pages for years. :/ I'll ask my team mates - both problems should not be happening. Regarding the templates, I just don't know how the skin could misinterpret templates' code, it shouldn't work that way. Regarding interwiki, I've heard about this problem a long time ago, believed it was resolved, no one mentioned this for a long time... that's odd. Well, I'll ask. Thank you @Ieneach fan 'e Esk for reporting these problems. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (oerlis) 10 nov 2022, 15.21 (CET)[beäntwurdzje]
@SGrabarczuk (WMF): I need to amend my complaint. I experimented a bit more after what you said. It turns out that if you're logged in using the new skin, the interlanguage linker works as it should. Because I made the old skin my default, I had only tried it before when I was logged out. So, for anonymus users what I wrote above is still valid. Isn't that strange? Surely it should work the same for all users. Ieneach fan 'e Esk (oerlis) 10 nov 2022, 15.53 (CET)[beäntwurdzje]
